Hi fellow Americans. Have you ever been on Jury duty? Have you ever been part of a jury? Because I am. Apparently, having a self-imposed quota of 1800 words a day to write for nanowrimo was not enough of an excuse to bail me out of my civil duty.
Yesterday, and today are jury selection. The things people said to get out of Jury Duty! Preposterous excuses, sob stories; people lie something awful. After one too many of those, I told myself I was not going to do that; be like them. Also, I realized that it's not exactly like I'm saving puppies in my daily life. I don't have something more important to do.
It's a civil case, that's all I'm allowed to say. A good thing too because I could never on a criminal case. I could not see myself be the one sending someone to jail.
Once on the jury, you get to sit and listen and maybe answer questions. That's it. So much for bringing ten books and getting a lot of work done. Once you're selected and the court is in session there is no ipod, no reading, no doodling, and no dozing off as a sweet, anachronistic judge repeats the same questions (and jokes) over an over to a a bunch of terribly daft people.
There are 18 of us in the box. They need only 12. I hope they reject me. Hey, I've never wanted to be rejected in my life, this will be a first.
I could tell you more about the case, but then I would have to kill you.

Jury duty is one of those funny things that we hate doing, but it really IS a civic duty and so important. I have an Irish friend who gets really angry when people do whatever they can to weasel out of serving, since really the right to a jury trial is one of our freedoms as Americans.
That being said, I've only had to go through the choosing process once and luckily did not get called. Hang in there!

My dear Corine, welcome to the club:)
Besides, this is a major HOO (human observation opportunity)...doesn't matter if it's civil or criminal. I covered trials & hearings. Oy.
But because of above, I was often rejected. I still always got something out of it. One time, a boyfriend! (Yes.)

et apres, je serai dans le jury et je te sauverai de le prison ??
Si tu n'es pas rejetee selon tes voeux, j'espere que cette "experience" te servira pour tes 1800 mots/jour ;-)

I got out of jury duty one time because I actually KNEW the defendant! Criminal case! The rest of the time, I have been called many many times, and didn't make the cut each of those times. So far, many are called, few are chosen!
I think I would feel quite noble to suffer through it all and do my part. We need jurors! I just can't imagine being without my iPhone for ten minutes, much less hours, or days!!
The other problem? I remember what I read or see, but rarely remember what I hear! Hope it's over soon for you!!

Aw, it's your initiation! You must invest in a pair of eyeball glasses or paint eyes on your eyelids so you can get some sleep should it get a bit dull!
Fingers crossed for rejection! ♥

People say the most stupid things to get out of jury duty. And it is tedious. I've served twice, been rejected more than that, but I agree that it is an important civic duty which I wish more people would take seriously. I guess I'm saying I always wish I could get out of it, but I am glad I don't. good luck.
